What Fruits Can Cats Eat?
Safe Fruits Cats Can Eat (In Small Amounts)
Here are some cat-safe fruits that are generally fine to share in moderation:
1. Apples (No Seeds or Core)
Rich in fiber and vitamin C, apples can be a crunchy treat. Just make sure they’re peeled, and never give cats the seeds, as they contain cyanide.
2. Bananas
Soft and naturally sweet, bananas are safe for cats in small bites. They’re high in sugar and carbs, though, so don’t overdo it.
3. Blueberries
These tiny berries are packed with antioxidants and are often found in some cat foods. Many cats like the texture, and they’re safe in small amounts.
4. Strawberries
Strawberries are full of vitamin C and fiber. Wash them well, remove the stem, and cut them into bite-sized pieces before offering.
5. Cantaloupe or Melon
Surprisingly, many cats enjoy melon. The scent may resemble amino acids found in meat, which explains the appeal. It’s hydrating and low-calorie.
6. Watermelon (Seedless Only)
Watermelon is safe and hydrating—perfect on a hot day. Just make sure it's seedless, and skip the rind.
7. Pumpkin (Plain and Cooked)
While not often thought of as a fruit, pumpkin is technically one! It's excellent for digestion and often recommended for cats with mild tummy troubles.
Fruits Cats Should Avoid
Not all fruits are safe for cats. Avoid feeding them these:
Grapes & Raisins – Can cause kidney failure in cats, even in small amounts.
Citrus Fruits (Lemons, Limes, Oranges) – Contain essential oils and citric acid that can irritate the stomach or cause toxicity.
Cherries – The pits, stems, and leaves contain cyanide, which is toxic.
Avocados – Can cause vomiting and diarrhea in some cats due to a substance called persin.
Tomatoes – Especially unripe ones or green parts, which contain solanine, a harmful compound.
